The Joy and Freedom of Being in Your 20’s

Young blonde woman in blue top with arms spread about enjoying life.

Being in your 20’s is a thrill in a lot of ways. You have arguably more freedom and flexibility in your choices and decisions than at any other point in your life.

Before you were a teenager, under your parental guardian’s authority and limited in what you could do. After your 20’s, you will potentially have a family of your own to think about. But in your 20’s, you are an adult and can afford to make decisions that you were incapable of making before.

The Joy

In your 20’s is the time for new experiences. You are more mature, and now have more money than ever before. Your entire world opens up.

Money matched with maturity is an interesting combination that arises around this age.

You:

  • have more ammunition to explore your interests and hobbies.
  • are finally becoming an adult and can be responsible while still going out and having fun.
  • are trying to figure out life while simultaneously enjoying everything it has to offer.

Not to mention your physical prime occurs in your 20’s.

The Freedom

Being in your 20’s is weird with no real rhyme or reason.

One moment you are accepting a job offer in your hometown, and the next moment you are moving across the country to live in a totally unfamiliar area where you know nobody.

Or one moment you are enjoying being single and having your own alone time with no plans to be in a relationship, and the next you’re meeting your girlfriend’s parents and so happy to have her in your life.

I use these examples because they actually happened to me. If you told me this is how my life would be in May – just 6 months earlier – I would have serious doubts. So many things change so quickly for us at this stage in life…

And in your 20’s, that can be a wonderful, even magical, concept.

I had the ability to move across the country because I am young, with no real commitments. I only have myself to look after. This is not something I take for granted. That is true freedom. If I were married with kids and had the opportunity to move so far away – or move anywhere for that matter – it would be a much bigger decision as it would impact more people than just myself.

We have the ability to do what we want, some great choices and others mistakes, and then learn from both the good and the bad. That is the beautiful thing about being young, but not too young, and experiencing life.

Best,

Eric
